ATMOSFAR Silica: Does It Exist? What to Collect Instead
ATMOSFAR has no silica resource. The Early Access material list is salvage, hydrogen, organics and knowledge. Here is what to collect for each job instead.

ATMOSFAR does not have a silica resource. The Early Access build documents four material families: salvage, hydrogen, organics and knowledge. There is no silica node, no silica recipe and no silica-derived crafting chain in the current build. If a guide sent you looking for it, you are probably thinking of another survival game.
That answer is short, but the search is common enough that it deserves a proper explanation. "Silica" is a standard survival-game material: sand plus heat, glass, bottles, lenses, electronics. Players arrive in a new crafting game expecting the same ladder. ATMOSFAR does not use that ladder. Its economy is built around a crashed colony, not a geology simulator.

What the official material list actually contains
The in-game resource pages and the official Steam description divide materials into four groups. The ATMOSFAR resources guide maps them in detail; this is the short version.
| Family | Examples | Where it comes from | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salvage | Structural scrap, pipes, panels, circuit boards | PACE facilities, wrecks, debris fields | Construction, tools, ship modules |
| Hydrogen | Hydrogen crystals, liquid hydrogen | Geysers, refinery processing | Fuel, power, ship operation |
| Organics | Wood, fruit, berries, seeds, plant fibre | The lush lower islands | Food, plant beds, basic crafting |
| Knowledge | Artefacts, research drives, blueprints, reactor cores | PACE sites and story locations | Research unlocks, reactor power, progression |
Silica is not a sub-item under any of those rows. It is not a hidden fifth family, and it is not produced by the material processor. The processor handles large scrap; it does not crush rock into sand.
Why the silica question keeps coming up
Three reasons.
First, the name sounds geological. ATMOSFAR is set on floating islands, and floating islands invite assumptions about rock, ore and sand. The game's actual resource loop is salvage-driven, but a new player has no way to know that before opening the crafting menu.
Second, other games train the reflex. ARK, Conan Exiles, Valheim and dozens of survival games use silica or sand as an early glass input. Guides for those games rank highly for "silica", and search results blend the titles together. A page that mentions silica and a page that mentions ATMOSFAR can appear side by side even when they are about different games.
Third, Early Access wikis are incomplete. When a game launches in Early Access, community maps fill gaps with guesses. A missing icon can become a rumour, and a rumour can become a "where to find silica" page. The official build is the check that matters.
Open the crafting table and search the recipe list for "silica" or "glass". If nothing appears, the material is not in the build. Do not trust a map pin from a video that does not show the item name in the inventory.
What to collect instead
The right substitute depends on what you were trying to make.
If you wanted construction material
Collect salvage. Structural scrap, pipes and panels are the bulk construction inputs, and they come from PACE facilities, abandoned camps and debris fields. The ATMOSFAR scrap guide explains which pieces the handheld extractor can break down and which ones need the Cloud Cruiser's material processor.
Circuit boards are the electronics bottleneck. They are found in PACE facilities and abandoned camps, and they gate ship modules and research equipment. If you are short of "tech" materials, circuit boards are the thing to hunt, not silica.
If you wanted fuel or power
Collect hydrogen. Hydrogen crystals come from geysers, and the refinery turns them into liquid hydrogen for fuel and power. The hydrogen crystals guide covers the deposit types and the refinery loop.
If you wanted food or plant growth
Collect organics from the lower islands: wood, fruit, berries, seeds and plant fibre. These feed the camp's food and plant beds, and they are the reason the starting region is green rather than rocky.
If you wanted research progress
Collect artefacts and research drives. These are not crafting inputs in the usual sense; they are the currency of the research desk. The ATMOSFAR crafting guide explains how artefacts turn into unlocks and why a full scrap hold with no artefacts stalls your progression.
Is there a glass substitute?
No documented one. The current build does not publish a glass recipe, and the material list does not include sand, quartz or silica. If a future patch adds a glass chain, it will appear in the patch notes and on the crafting table; until then, treat any "glass location" claim as unverified.
This matters for base building. If you are planning a structure that would use windows in another survival game, plan around the panels and structural pieces that actually exist. The camp hub guide covers the build order and the power budget for a working base.
Will silica be added later?
The official Early Access roadmap does not list a new resource family. That does not rule out a future addition, but it does mean there is no date, no recipe and no location to report. "Official not stated" is the accurate answer, and it is more useful than a speculative map pin.
ATMOSFAR's Early Access period is active, and the developers have shipped several patches in the first week. If the material economy changes, the patch notes on the Steam news hub will be the first reliable source. The early access roadmap page tracks what has been confirmed so far.
FAQ
Does ATMOSFAR have silica? No. The Early Access build documents salvage, hydrogen, organics and knowledge materials. Silica is not one of them.
Where do you find silica in ATMOSFAR? Nowhere. There is no silica node or silica recipe in the current build.
What is silica used for in ATMOSFAR? Nothing. The game does not use it. If you need construction material, collect salvage; if you need fuel, collect hydrogen.
Is there a sand or glass resource? No sand, quartz or glass resource is documented in the Early Access build.
Why do some guides mention ATMOSFAR silica? Most likely because silica is a common survival-game material and search results mix games together. Check the item name in the crafting table before trusting a location guide.
